Barbacoa is a new smokehouse and eatery in Calle Loiza. Our challenge was to create a versatile brand that remains visually consistent across all of its applications. The logo was designed using Barbacoa’s brandthree main components: Gladiator, Pirate, and a Taino. We created illustrations of the hat, weapon, and drinking glass for each of the three.

For Barbacoa’s branding we created a cross using arrows. That cross had Barbacoa’s brand stamps in the middle. We wanted the brand torepresent a fun, accessible, and casual dinning experience.

The concept for Barbacoa’s brand development comes from theTaíno word barbicu, which means the sacred fire on which they will cook their food. The word barbicu was then incorporated into the English language bypirate William Dampier. The Gladiator comes from Barbacoa’s chef Angel Antonio, who bought a Gladiator hat and wore it all through his honeymoon. The color palette is also inspired from the origins of barbeque because red represents fire and the meat brass.
